The drawing stemmed from So’s design ‘An Echo in Time’ – the Pan European memorial for victims of 20th century totalitarianism was named First Prize Winner overall of the Eyeline Award 2018, the RIBA Journal’s Annual International Drawing Competition, from an entry of 1000 drawings worldwide. It was exhibited at the RIBA’s London Headquarters and RIBA North in Liverpool in 2018 and was later acquired by V&A’s permanent collection in late September 2019.
The drawing entitled The Messenger is a charcoal drawing based on So’s imagination and memory of the site. He has chosen to communicate the emotions behind the concept: ‘I saw myself as nothing more than a messenger carrying a suitcase full of letters written between the victims and their loved ones from all over Europe, who then scattered them over the square.’
