UNIQLO: The Spirit of Birmingham

The Spirit of Birmingham is a three-storey mural installation for UNIQLO Birmingham at Bullring, created by artists UUendy Lau and Hinz Pak. Drawing inspiration from Japanese folklore and Birmingham’s vibrant local culture, the work reimagines the ancient tale of Hyakki Yagyō as a contemporary urban parade.

The mural transforms a commercial interior into a shared cultural experience, celebrating diversity, imagination, and collective joy. By blending myth, movement and local characters, the project creates an emotionally resonant environment that invites viewers to pause, appreciate and feel part of a larger and celebratory narrative rooted in place and community.

The concept reinterpreted the traditional ‘night parade’ into a joyful city procession. Instead of ancient spirits, Birmingham’s architecture, music, and local icons come alive alongside its residents.
